Looking for Book Covers and Interiors for Your New Book?

I was sent this from an editor who is so helpful I can’t tell you all that she has done for me. She is Christine Van Zandt at Write for Success.  This information is published by Carla King’s Self-Pub Boot Camp news.
12 Places to Find Book Interior and Cover Designers
Book design and editing are what will make your indie book stand out. Don’t make the mistake of doing it yourself when you can spend as little as $100 to hire a designer who knows what they’re doing. I wish I had a list of every great book designer, but they vary genre by genre, and a designer in the romance category won’t be appropriate in the sci-fi category and so on. If you can’t get a personal recommendation from an author you know, here are 10 great places to find book interior and cover designers.
  1. Book Design Templates is a really popular tool for do it yourself book designers because they’re Word templates and so easy to use. There’s a big selection of interior book design templates including trade paperback, full-color and even children’s book templates. They look just as good as designs created in InDesign for a fraction of the cost, with single-book licenses for as little as $37. Designer Joel Friedlander also has a book cover design template in Word, plus a media kit template and even a nonfiction book proposal template. He provides generous discounts for multiple purchases at the same time. Publishers, author co-ops, and publishing professionals can buy discounted licenses for creating quantities of books. Check it out!
  2. Mark Coker of Smashwords maintains an updated list of book interior formatters and cover designers. Here it is.
  3. BookBaby and Vook are full service ebook publishing and distribution services who will handle book cover and interior design for you.
  4. The PressBooks publishing platform is free but pay a bit more and you get to choose from a set of truly lovely CSS-driven interior book designs that export to both print and ebook formats.
  5. BiblioCrunch is a membership site with a list of designers and other publishing professionals and they make sure they’re professional before they’ll list them on their site. It costs a little for membership to BiblioCrunch but it’s definitely worth it as the caliber of professionals there is guaranteed.
  6. Writer.ly is a free service, kind of a craigslist for authors and publishers.
  7. 99Designs is a crowdsourced design site and they have a whole section devoted to book cover designers.
  8. Fiverr might seem a dubious place to get book cover design and interior book formatting, because sometimes you get what you pay for. That said, I’ve had a few experiences with Fiverr sellers now and have found all but one really good at what they do. So take a look at ebook cover designers and other services. Some services just start at $5 to entice you into higher-quality work.
  9. Tumblr is a blogging platform that lots of artists use and a great place to browse the work of book cover designers.
  10. See Joel Friedlander’s “The Book Designer” site for his Book Cover Design awards category where he critiques designs submitted to him for comment. You’ll get an education on what makes a good cover and you might also find a great designer.
  11. Derek Murphy goes down a different path than Friedlander with his DIY book cover design templates. He’s supplied art, photography and graphics paired with typography so that  you can plug in your title and author name and you’re good to go.
  12. Last but not least, there’s Kit Foster Design in the UK who, like Murphy, has a suite of DIY covers along with full-service cover design for very reasonable prices.

Dead Silence

Have you ever had this happen?  I’m reading the next chapter I ‘m working on to my critique group and when I finish…….dead silence.  Whoa, what happened?  Was it so terrible or so good no one had anything to say?  Or was it I didn’t speak loud enough, or was it just that one sentence where I had someone threatening to put the guys balls in his mouth? Maybe it was a little too graphic?

Well, I couldn’t not know, so I wrote to one of the group and guess what.  No comments because they thought it was good.  So there you go… writer’s paranoia.  Listen to your heart and don’t let yourself get all worried anytime someone doesn’t just fall all over themselves to tell you how great that last piece of writing was.

But, if you do get constructive criticism, don’t get your hackles up… maybe they have a point and you should look at your work with fresh eyes.  Just saying!

The Baby Cage

Wow, How terrifying was this? Actually, you could use this and write a book about the people and babies from this era. What were they thinking?

I could never use this, but it does make for an interesting post!

Baby-cages-used-to-ensure-that-children-get-enough-sunlight-and-fresh-air-when-living-in-an-apartment-building-ca-1937

In the 1930s, London nannies lacking space for their young ones resorted to the baby cage. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a wire contraption, patented in the U.S. in 1922, that lets you claim that space outside your city window for your infant. Risky? Maybe, but so convenient.

It seems that this historical oddity is one that constantly comes in and out of the media and causes incredible public shock and outrage every time. It is amazing how attitudes change, so that something invented in the 1920s to do nothing but good now leaves us struggling to believe it ever happened.

In 1923 Emma Read patented the Portable Baby Cage. It was designed to solve the problem of large high rises in urban areas which left families with no open spaces to allow their young children…

Do You Self-Publish?

A great look at the world of self publishing. There are some great self published books out there, but some really poor ones too.

Then you may not like this post. In my defense, this is strictly my own personal opinion, from wasting precious time reading garbage. So…

I have to say, I am really beginning to take issue with the whole entire ability of persons named-or-un-named (Okay, un-named), to self-publish. Everyone is an author now. There are no publishers telling you your book is terrible, or editors saying they wouldn’t use your story on the bottom of their bird cage. It does not matter if you do, or most likely do not, have a fairly adequate grasp of your native language. Punctuation? Who cares. Slang that does not fit or suit the story? Sure, just throw it in. Let’s randomly use text messaging short hand, just because we don’t know how to spell it out.

Having your spell checker show you clean pages does not a good story make. I cannot even begin…

Working on a New Book and Washing my Hands.

So, my first book (Waiting on the Outside) is ready for editing and I am working on two more.  One was supposed to be a medical thriller about a virus, but then along came the real deal, Ebola.  I just hope the Ebola epidemic does not play out like I would have written it and spread throughout the world.

Remember, flu season is coming up, so keep washing your hands and using hand sanitizer.  Keep away from anyone who looks sick and or is sneezing and coughing and use your inner elbow to cough or sneeze in.

If you follow those simple precautions, maybe we all can escape getting the flu this year. YES!

P.S. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those afflicted with the deadly  Ebola disease, their families and their caretakers.

Beta Readers

On Goodreads you can find beta readers who will take their time to read your manuscript and give feedback.  It is all free and a valuable tool for any writer!  They are awesome!

I am currently beta  reading two novels, and as with the others I have read, I see some great work.  I am also learning from this experience how to be a better writer.
